This is a rather rare species, endemic to Colombia. Plants were recently offered for sale by several Colombian vendors at the Redlands Festival, Florida, May 2008. See photo below left.

Stanhopea shuttleworthii for sale May 2008

Flowers are yellow with red markings. This species grows in intermediate conditions.

There is a research project currently underway in the Biotechnology department at the University of Pamplona, Colombia, directed by Martha Patricia Ochoa. It involves "vegetative" in vitro propagation of Stanhopea shuttleworthii.
